5 Principles for Effective Leadership:

  • Build positive relationships

  • Communicate my vision for an effective school

  • Focus on academic achievement

  • Keep our kids safe, physically and emotionally

  • Form a partnership with families and community

Middle Years Program
(MYP)- Harbour Pointe is a fully authorized International Baccalaureate school. We were the first fully authorized middle school in Washington! IB schools are known for being academically rigorous and excellent. We prepare young people to improve the world through intercultural understanding and respect. Our three fundamental concepts are: intercultural awareness, communication, and a holistic view of knowledge.

Holistic Child

As an International Baccalaureate school, we focus on the whole child. We value music, art, athletics, and extra-curricular activities. We strive to offer a variety of clubs to provide opportunities for students to connect to school in different ways. Students who are involved in school tend to perform better academically. We also know that learning can’t take place if the child is not emotionally safe and stimulated.

Focus on Self-Reflection

My focus this year is on teaching the importance of self-reflection.  Self-reflection is a natural step in the process of learning.  Without it, content in the classroom may be unrelated to the student’s real life and may not be long-lasting.  We are trying to be more intentional by building in classroom time to reflect on what we have learned and tie it to previous learning.  Self-reflection allows us to evaluate our learning as it relates to learning targets. Our learning targets our based on Washington State’s Essential Academic Learnings, Grade Level Expectations, and the Middle Years Programme Aims and Objectives.  In addition, self-reflection allows students to make connections among various subject areas and determine how learning is interrelated. Students who regularly reflect about learning are better able to make the learning meaningful, make connections with other subjects and the world, as well as identify gaps between current skills and target skills. A Developmental Portfolio of collected work from 6th to 8th grade is a tool used to help students see the progress of their learning throughout middle school. Teachers can use students’ oral and written self-reflections as a formative assessment to gauge and modify their own instruction. In addition, teachers reflect about their own practice through dialogue and quiet thinking time.  We know that we can only get better by reflecting about our current practice. Self-reflection is a valuable component in learning and is also promoted by International Baccalaureate.
