 Course  Description:

Science is a cooperative experience shared jointly by individuals and the international community. IBMYP Science seeks to incorporate scientific thinking from across the world. It is a progression of asking questions, making observations, and making connections between the known and the new.

The curriculum will be based on astronomy, chemical processes, ecology and human growth and development. All 7th grade science students will maintain a daily Science Notebook. This notebook will include individual thinking and processing as we work toward science goals. The notebook provides evidence of learning and will help students study for summative assessments (tests).

This class is designed to improve scientific inquiry skills by exploring one’s environment, asking questions, making observations, developing hypotheses, engaging in experimentation and investigations, collecting and analyzing data, drawing conclusions, making inferences, and formulating new questions. Students will learn to process data, interpret results, design experiments and handle standard lab equipment. Curriculum content has been selected with the realization that science is continuously progressing and the contemporary science curriculum is never truly stable.

Hours of Availability:

Students can make arrangements with me in advance to receive additional assistance if necessary. I am available to help students before or after school nearly every day. At times parent conferences, club activities, or other functions may alter my schedule and availability to students. I have a sign up sheet in my classroom where students can see my weekly availability and sign up for time to meet with me.

I look forward to working with your student this year! If you have any additional questions not answered here, please feel free to contact me.

 Science Fair

Who: All 7th Grade students

What: The Science Fair is a noncompetitive opportunity for students to present discoveries made during scientific investigations based on original questions.

Where: Harbour Pointe Middle School Gym

 When: Thursday, May 6th, 2010

 Why: Students will

  • own their inquiries.

  • interact with other students who have common interests.

  • view science as a dynamic force in their own lives.

  • communicate in authentic ways and for authentic purposes.

  • consider critically, the credibility of their research and research of others.

  • draw upon the discoveries of other students to enhance their own research.

How can I help my child?

Open Houses will be available to provide parents with an overview of the entire process once we introduce the project to the students. This will allow you to be able to provide the best support to your child. Parent nights are scheduled for              in the HP library from 6-7pm. Please bring your child's binder with you on the night you attend. Both nights are exactly the same, so come to the night that fits with your schedule.

  • Be available for guidance if your child should need your help.

  • Ask questions about your child’s investigations and how it is progressing.

  • Be ready to supply materials that your child may need for the investigation.

  • Plan to visit and see your child’s investigation on the evening of the fair.

Volunteers?  We will be looking for parent volunteers to assist us in making this a successful science fair.
