Frequently Asked Questions
| What will I find in the library? | Thousands of fiction, nonfiction and reference books, audiobooks, magazines, computers, a few supplies, and helpful library staff. |
| What can I do in the library? | Find just the right book, do homework, get help with research, have a quiet study space for individual and group work, use computers for school work, find high quality web resources, print an assignment, and get instruction and support with technology. |
| When is the library open? | Library hours are approximately 6:50 am to 3:30 pm. Homework room is in the library from 2:00-3:30. Tutors are usually available to help with math. |
| What are the library rules? | Proper behavior is important in the library. Quietly doing school work, reading, and using computers only for school work are examples of proper behavior. |
| Do I need a library card to check out books? | No. It is helpful if you use your library card, but you may also check out books, books on tape or CD, or magazines, by giving your student number or name. |
| How many items may I check out? | We recommend that you have no more than four items out at a time, though the computer won't stop you until you have ten items checked out. |
| When are items due? | All items except reference books are due in three weeks. Reference books may be checked out after school and returned before school the next day. |
| What happens if I have overdue or lost books? | You need to return books on time. However, you may at times get special permission to check out books even when you have overdues. You may also "read off" the cost of lost or damaged library books. Do this by completing a contract the librarian gives you, then reading before or after school, in the presence of your teacher or librarian, at the rate of $5.00/hr. When the fine has been "read off", the book is removed from your name. |
| May I check out videos and DVDs? | Only staff members may check out videos and DVDs. |
| May I use computers for email, games and other personal activities? | Computers are to be used for school work only. If you aren't doing school-related work, you will be asked to log off of the computer. |
| May I make photocopies in the library? | Yes. You are allowed ten free photocopies for each school project. |
| What is my computer printing quota each month? | You are allowed sixty pages of printing per month. If you need information from the internet, be sure to copy and paste to a word document before printing. This will help avoid unintentional printing. |
| How do I access databases from home? | The library has bookmarks that list databases/passwords for using databases at home. |
| Can I look at the library catalog from home? | Not at this time. |
| Who works in the library? | Peggy Nystrom, Librarian: Mrs.
Nystrom's undergraduate degrees are in English and Home Economics from
Montana State University. Her master's degree is in Library and
Information Science from the University of Washington. She has been
Mariner's librarian since 2000. Jane Frederick, Paradeucator: Mrs. Frederick attended Cerritos Community College and Cal State Fullerton majoring in liberal arts. She has worked in Mariner's library since 1998. Bea Hine, Paraeducator: Mrs. Hine works in the library part-time. She has worked in Mariner's library since 2004. |
