World of
Mathematics
Also known as MathWorld , this site is a "comprehensive,
and interactive mathematics
encyclopedia intended for students, educators, math enthusiasts, and
researchers." The subject index includes algebra, applied
mathematics, calculus and
analysis, discrete mathematics,
the foundations and history of
mathematics, geometry, number theory, probability and statistics,
recreational mathematics,
and topology. In addition, there is a complete alphabetical index and a good
search engine. Developed in parallel with the CRC Concise Encyclopedia of
Mathematics , in print and
on CD-ROM.

Mathematical Snippets
Explore a few notable
mathematical ideas and
results pondered by mathematicians.
This website includes brief descriptions of the Pythagorean Theorem, Archimedes'
Tombstone, the Möbius Strip, the Koch Snowflake Curve, Plateau's Problem, and
counting to infinity. From the Science Division at Bellevue Community College,
Washington state.

Mathematics of Cartography
Presents the relationship between maps and
mathematics. Includes a
brief history of mapmaking; background on scale, coordinate systems, and
projection and demonstrations of how they are related to cartography; word
problems; interactive exercises; related resources; and career information.
Created and maintained by a math instructor.

Mathematics and Knots
This exhibition uses
mathematics and diagrams to
help explain knots. Includes terminology, rules for knot addition, the
applications of knot theory, the history of knots, and related links. Exhibition
sponsored by the London
Mathematical Society.

The
Mathematics of Tsunamis
"The recent tragic events following the December 2004
magnitude 9.0 earthquake in the Indian Ocean have reminded us of the need for
scientific understanding and modeling of complicated physical phenomena in order
to prevent unnecessary loss of life from natural disasters." This document looks
at calculations related to tsunami physics and provides a visualization of a
tsunami. Includes links to related concepts. From MathWorld.

Origami Mathematics
Information on the
mathematics of
paper-folding, including the geometry and origami axioms formulated by
Italian-Japanese mathematician
Humiaki Huzita. The section "Five Intersecting Tetrahedra" presents construction
instructions and other types of models. "Notes for an Origami/Combinatorial
Geometry Course" (a course offered at Merrimack College, North Andover, Mass.),
a gallery, and annotated links are also provided.

The
Mathematical Atlas: A
Gateway to Modern Mathematics
This searchable site provides a collection of articles
about the many subfields of math and includes definitions, brief biographies,
and explanations. Each topic includes a history, related areas, and subfields as
well as related print and Internet resources. It also includes an introduction
to the Mathematics Subject
Classification (MSC) scheme on which the site's arrangement is based.

Wolfram Research's
Mathematical Functions
An information resource for over 37,000
mathematical functions.
Browse by function category or search. The site "details the interrelationships
between the special functions of
mathematical physics and the elementary functions of
mathematical analysis as
well as the interrelationships between the functions in each group." Formulas
are presented in standard form as well as MathML and ASCII form. Contributions
are welcome.

Mathematics Tables and
Formulas
An easily accessed list of common
mathematics tables and
formulas. Multiplication, primes, integrals, trignometrics, conversions, and
derivatives are only some of the available tables. There is a section of online
examinations to test your
mathematical knowledge. A Cyberboard for questions is included, as well
as links to books and additional math sites.
