All About the Mukilteo Library!

Who is Mrs. Wilson and What Does She Do?

Welcome to the Library at Mukilteo Elementary!  I am the teacher librarian for all kindergartner through fifth grade students. Students come to see me once a week for a fifteen minute checkout.  Teachers also coordinate and collaborate with me in signing up for several 60 minute blocks for project based learning, research, and technology integration throughout the course of the year.

I went to Pacific Lutheran University and received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Elementary Education in 1995.  I enjoyed the experience so much that I went back and received my Masters Degree from Pacific Lutheran University in 1998 in Literacy Education.  I have also obtained my Librarian Endorsement from the same institution in 2000. I completed my English as a Second Language Endorsement from Seattle Pacific University in Spring of 2003.

This is my fourteenth year teaching.  This is my sixth year in library land. Prior to that,  I taught English as a Second Language at Picnic Point Elementary in the mornings, and was an Elementary Support Teacher teaching technology for third, fourth, and fifth grade students at Horizon Elementary for two years. I have also taught first grade in the Issaquah School District and have taught third grade in the Port Angeles School District.  I also spent four years working as a Reading Specialist in Port Angeles.

I have a large love for literacy.  I enjoy working with computers as well as designing and implementing curriculum.  I believe that we need to prepare our students for a world in which they will have to be technologically literate as well as consumers of information.  I was fortunate to receive a Gates Teacher Leadership Project Grant in 1999-2000.  This followed receiving a Mukilteo School District Grant to work further in helping students and teachers gain technology skills during the 2002-2003 school year.  During 2003-2004,  I worked on a grant through Puget Sound Center Teaching and Coaching Initiative to further my craft.  I also have a large love and interest in reading assessment and have worked with OSPI since 2000 on the Reading Assessment Leadership Team to work with elements of the Reading WASL.  Being on this state committee has opened my eyes and given me a large understanding of teaching best practices of literacy to prepare our students for success.  Last year I took on the responsibility of mentoring another elementary librarian in the district and this year I am pursuing another technology grant through the school district in working with an electronic whiteboard.

When I am not working I enjoy being a ski instructor during the winter.  I also enjoy traveling to places that involve using a passport with my husband.  I also enjoy running, playing basketball, reading, participating in triathlons, and spending time with friends, family, and my cat Chance.

Here I am skiing with my sister in Montana!
