Principal’s
Message
As leader of the helm at
Olympic View, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your
continuous support. I always comment to those in my
own neighborhood how fortunate I am to work in this great community and to
be a
part of your child’s educational needs.
In addition to your support, there have been some second order changes that
have occurred at Olympic View with our staff that I am eager to share:
- Teachers understand
that the grade level expectations are our curriculum. As a district we have
identified power standards which are learning targets
that are taught at each grade level. These power standards are correlated with
our
state’s grade level expectations.
- We recognize that teaching is no longer an isolated profession.
- Teachers with the same content have common plan time. This allows for
increased collaboration amongst staff and allows teachers time to look at
assessments and make decisions based on data.
- We have programs
built into the school day to assist students with their academic success.
These programs include a literacy block class, our Lunch
Bunch program,
and our After School pirate success program.
- We have monthly assessment buffets in lieu of a staff meeting. At these
buffets a variety of teachers present assessments that they have used
with students, with corresponding rubrics so students can identify what criteria
they need
to meet or exceed standard. At times, students present to teachers.
This is
exciting because students can articulate what they need as learners
to improve upon their personal performance.
- We have embraced
professional learning communities and recognize the importance of taking
risks in order to grow professionally. Four questions
drive our work:
- What is it we
want students to learn?
- How will we
know when they’ve learned it?
- How will we
respond when they don’t?
- What if they
already know it?
- Many teachers
have piloted standards based reporting this year. This is exciting as this
shows
students and parents where they are at with each
standard they are being assessed in.
- The teachers
at Olympic View are committed to teaching as a profession. They open their
doors willingly to others recognizing that we learn from each
other.
This year our school was chosen as a coaching school where other middle
schools visit as our teachers are openly coached as part of their professional
development.
- Many of our
staff have attended the Assessment Training Institute in Portland, Oregon.
This professional development has helped to change the
culture of our
building as teachers recognize the importance of formative assessment
practices and the importance of providing students with timely, descriptive
feedback.
Formative assessments are assessments used for student learning. These
are the ongoing assessments that inform the students where they are
at on their
journey to meeting a specific standard.
- We have
developed a school wide Pyramid of Interventions so students have every
opportunity to meet a specific learning target. If students struggle,
we provide
them with additional time and support to assist with their learning.
Students
are given multiple opportunities on their journey to meeting
a specific learning target.
I am extremely proud of the work the staff of Olympic View is doing. They
recognize the importance of having the time to work together and collaborate
as teams of professionals. They look at data and make instructional decisions
based on that data. They understand the importance of high quality assessments.
They refine, adjust, change as they see necessary to improve instruction in
the classrooms. They genuinely care about the well being of all students and
the importance of getting each and every student to standard. They know that
all students do not achieve at the same rate. As a result, students are provided
multiple opportunities for their academic success.
