| Military and Apprenticeship |
The Army is on campus the first WEDNESDAY of each month. The Navy is on campus the second MONDAY of each month.
Go to this page to link into all four branches of the military. For information on all branches of the service, go to today's military. Great information on apprenticeship programs. Excellent site for internships, volunteer opportunities, and apprenticeships. The ASVAB (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) test is a great way to find out if the career you're interested in matches your aptitude. It is also required for those students interested in enlisting in the Armed Forces. The test is FREE and was offered at Mariner on December 8 at 8:30 a.m. Students need to sign up in the Career Center the week before and pick up a pass.

Take a Year Off After High School
|
CityYear
-
City Year, a member of AmeriCorps, unites young adults, ages 17-24, for a
year of full-time community service, leadership development, and civic
engagement. While City'
Year's primary focus is on improving the lives of children, corps members
also renovate housing and beautify urban space. Workers earn a weekly
stipend and a $5,000 education bonus at the end of ten months. Workers
receive college and career counseling, and meet regularly with community and
business leaders.
Job Corps - Job Corps provides youth with an opportunity to develop skills they need to succeed in a promising career. Job Corps is a federally funded program that costs nothing. Students in the program are paid a monthly allowance, and the longer they stay with the program, the higher their allowance becomes. Job Corps provides youth with the chance to learn a trade and get a high school diploma or GED, and offers youth help in getting a job. Job Corps is committed to offering all students a safe, drug-free environment where they can take advantage of the resources provided. If you are interested in joining Job Corps, or if you'd like to find out more about the program, call 1-800-733-JOBS (1-800-733-5627). An operator will provide you with general information about the program, refer you to the admissions counselor closest to where you live, and mail you an information packet. Or, visit the link above. Americorps - Corps members work in teams of 5-10 people from a wide variety of backgrounds. In exchange for service, they receive a living allowance (ranging from $100-$170 per week) and a bonus upon completion of their service commitment. Bonuses range up to $5,000-$10,000 per year of full-time service. Some programs don't require you to use the bonus for education expenses; others give smaller bonuses to the non-college bound. |
