Teacher Notes

Students will need access to computers to complete this project. The lesson was created and implemented to be used in groups. The websites are not all written specifically for 2nd grade students so the reading level is higher than many 2nd grade students can easily read. When grouping your students, make sure you have at least one student in the group who is a proficient reader. Look at grouping notes for some ideas.

There are 15 Fax Clues provided with a key at the bottom and the job descriptions I used for this project.

When sending these clues, I divided them up and only sent one page to each student through Visual Casel. Each student recieved a "fax," but since the students were in groups of 3 (I had 2 groups of 2) I only had to use 9 of the animals. I offered doing the project a second time as an extra credit option, allowing me some extra animals that were not used during the initial project.

I also had an extra credit homework option to students who wanted to find some more animals for a 6th habitat (Australian and New Zealand Marsupials). They could find some websites at home for one animal of each type from down under one week and then fill out a new animal form either on the computer or a hard copy the next week.

To adapt with older students or with advanced 2nd grade groups, the project could include a powerpoint or require an oral presentation. My class actually did an informal presentation, but I did not include it in the rubric or grade it.
