Welcome to Discovery Buddy Project
Spelling is based upon our reading curriculum and common spelling patterns or rules. Current Spelling Words. This Week's Spelling Words (finished for 2008)
Students will have frequent writing projects based upon our reading curriculum. They will also participate in Writer's Workshop. Writer's Workshop is cycle of pre-writing, drafting, revising, editing and publishing writing. Most of our writing projects will be published using computers.
Students practice and learn grammar skills through mini-lessons taught during Writer's Workshop, direct instruction based upon our Reading Practice Books, and through other daily assignments.
Reading is taught with a combination of whole class and small group instruction. We focus upon the use of reading strategies that can be applied to books of all levels. We will also use Reader's Workshop including leveled reading groups and use nonfiction selections to teach skills.
Accelerated Reader (AR)Triathlon Challenge: The students are earning reading points using our Accelerated Reader program. Students read books on their reading level and then take computerized tests which ask questions based upon the book's plot. Books are given different point values based upon their difficulty. In our classroom, the students are using the points to complete fictional triathlons. Each point equals an imaginary mile in one of four type of triathlons: sprint (18 points), Olympic (32 points), half ironman (70.3 points), and the full ironman (140.6) points. Students choose their event (challenge level) and build points toward the imaginary finish line. Finishers in the sprint and Olympic length events will receive finishers ribbons. Half ironman and full ironman finishers will receive finisher medals.
Math is a combination of basic facts practice, Everyday Math and Problem Solving (see examples below). We use project based learning (see problem solving examples below) and real life application of math skills to help the students learn.
