Music History:

Jazz 1800s-Present
Influences include African rhythms and drumbeats, spirituals, blues,
gospel, marching bands and European classical music. Considered the
first American music to influence the world.
Spirituals- Sung by African-American slaves to
express their religious beliefs, feelings, and desire for freedom.

Many slaveholders did not allow the slaves to
speak to each other, so as they worked in the fields, they often
communicated through singing.
-
Some
“freedom songs” were disguised as spirituals. Slaves sang songs to
communicate opportunities of escape to each other.

Blues 1807-1930 
First
sung by African-American slaves who expressed the sadness in
their hearts.

Later, grew into a style of music containing a
variety of emotions: joy, pain, happiness, grief.

First sung primarily by African-Americans.

Later, grew into an art form enjoyed by people
all around the world.
·
W.C. Handy is considered the “Father of the
Blues.”
