5th Grade & 4th Grade

Music History:

Jazz 1800s-Present Influences include African rhythms and drumbeats, spirituals, blues, gospel, marching bands and European classical music. Considered the first American music to influence the world. 

Spirituals- Sung by African-American slaves to express their religious beliefs, feelings, and desire for freedom. 

  • Many slaveholders did not allow the slaves to speak to each other, so as they worked in the fields, they often communicated through singing.

  •  Some “freedom songs” were disguised as spirituals. Slaves sang songs to communicate opportunities of escape to each other.

Blues 1807-1930

 First sung by African-American slaves who expressed the sadness in their hearts.

·     Later, grew into a style of music containing a variety of emotions: joy, pain, happiness, grief.

·     First sung primarily by African-Americans.

·     Later, grew into an art form enjoyed by people all around the world.

·     W.C. Handy is considered the “Father of the Blues.”

Vocal Exercises:

 S=Singing. Students are on their way to successfully matching pitch. NY=Not Yet. Students have not yet" discovered" their singing voices, instead using their speaking voice to sing.  We use a variety of vocal exercises to build breath support, strengthen tone, and promote healthy young voices.

Music concepts:

Steady Beat- An unchanging pulse, like the beat of your heart.

     

 

Timbre (Tamber)- The special sound that makes one instrument or singing voice sound different from another.
