Reading

The third grade reading program uses 6 universal themes from the Houghton Mifflin's Reading program. Each theme covers basic reading strategies and integrated language arts activities.

Along with these themes, students will read chapter books every month. Some of the books will be Accelerated Reader (AR) books. The AR books vary in length and reading level. Once students finish reading an AR book they are able to take a computerized comprehension test in the classroom or in the library. After completing the tests, each student is evaluated for the percentage of correct answers, their average reading level, and the number of tests passed. The books in the AR program are from some of the best children's authors available today. I have found many of these books to be good quality and interesting for students at any reading level.

Student have a list of third grade testable AR books behind their reading divider in their notebook. You may want to review this list with your child and possibly check out books from the public library. If by chance you would like to donate used books to our classroom collection, please let me know and I will arrange a time to pick up the books. Thanks.
