Book Publishing Project (Language Arts and Social Studies)
In October, we will begin our Book Publishing Project with Discovery Elementary School. Our team will be writing books for fourth graders at Discovery. The younger students will choose a European country they would like to learn about and pathfinders will then pair with a student and research and write the book from the perspective of a child from the chosen country who has come to the United States. The books are both written and illustrated by our team.
The drafts are sent in for publishing (hardbound!) in December, an d then in February we will have a Book Celebration Party and gift the books to the elementary students. Our students find the project very rewarding and learn so much about the writing process.
Hot Air Balloons! (Science and Language Arts)
In the spring, we will embark on learning the science of hot air balloons. Not only will the students research how and why balloons are able to fly, they will also develop a hot air balloon business brochure. In groups, the students will build large scale hot air balloons that actually fly!
