WHY STUDY PHOTOGRAPHY ?
UNIT OBJECTIVE
After completion of this unit, the student should be able to identify why people want to take photographs.  Competencies will be demonstrated by correctly scoring a minimum of 85% on the unit quiz.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES
1. List why people want to study photography.
2. Define what photography is.
3. Explain what role photography plays in the journalism field.
4. Understand and define other careers in photography.
5. Comprehend how photography is useful in our everyday lives.

1. THERE ARE MANY REASONS WHY PEOPLE STUDY PHOTOGRAPHY.
A. BEGINNERS WANT TO LEARN:
        1. How to operate a camera
        2. Take pictures
        3. Develop their film
        4. Make enlarged prints in a step by step manner.

B. EXPERIENCED AMATEUR PHOTOGRAPHERS WANT TO:
        1. Improve technique
        2. Strive to possibility become a professional

* * WHAT IS PHOTOGRAPHY?
Photography is the process and  art of producing images of objects  by the action of light on sensitized  surfaces like film.

2. PHOTOGRAPHY AS A CREATIVE EXPRESSION
A. Photography began as an art form.
B. Common people could not afford  art done in the traditional way (painting).
C. One of the most famous  photographers is Ansel Adams who  specialized in outdoor photos.
D. Although photography as an art form is important people find that it is very difficult
do.
    1. Work is very tedious
    2. Print quality
    3. Demand for art type photos is very limited

3. WHAT TYPE OF INDUSTRY IS GREATEST EMPLOYER OF PHOTOGRAPHERS
A. Photojournalism is the biggest  employer of photographers.
    1. Newspapers
    2. Magazines
    3. Television
B. Photojournalist work includes:
    1. Freelance
    2. Sometimes rugged working conditions
    3. Gets paid by selling photos
    4. Deals with the unexpected

4. WHO IS CONSIDERED THE FIRST PHOTOJOURNALIST ?
A. Mathew Brady was the first photojournalist.
B. Brady followed the Union Army into the battlefield
C. Brady's work was not liked because of the horrors of war his pictures depicted.

5. WHAT TYPES OF CAREERS ARE THERE IN PHOTOGRAPHY ?
A. Commercial Photographers
    1. Operate their studios
    2. Take pictures in very controlled conditions, such as:
        A. Weddings
        B. Families
        C. Portraits
    3. Most commercial photographers charge a flat fee.

B. Fashion Photographer
    1. Illustrates new clothing
    2. Photos appear in:
        A. Papers
        B. Magazines
        C. Advertisements
    3. Most work is done in the studio
    4. Location work is sometimes important
    5. Fashion photographers must understand the "look" the designer wants to portray.
    6. Paid by the job

C. Advertising photographer
    1. Photographs products
    2. Must be able to show product in an appealing way and make people want to buy the
    product.
    3. Paid by the job/hour.

D. Architectural Photographers
    1. Take pictures of buildings
    2. These pictures are used by:
        A. Contractors
        B. Real estate people
        C. Architects
        D. Paid by the job/hour.
        E. Industrial Photographers
            These photographers are used to provide:
                1. Advertisement about a company
                2. Training programs for companies

F. Law enforcement
    1. Take photos of crime scene
    2. Photos help in solving crimes
    3. Employed by police or sheriff's department

G. Free-lance
    1. Work for themselves
    2. Work with a variety of clients
    3. Work odd hours and odd work days.

H. Other photo related jobs:
There are many jobs where photography is important.  The basic knowledge of how to take a good, clear photo will help.
            1. Insurance adjuster
            2. Science (to document what  you are doing)
            3. Agriculture

6. Some of the reasons we study photography include:
        A. Because we like to.
        B. It is relaxing
        C. Photography is creative and rewarding.
