The State Board of Education is responsible for setting State minimum graduation requirements.  The State Board has revised the requirements for the 9th grade class of 2004.  There will be two additional non-credit requirements.  These requirements are described below:

Culminating Project:  Each student shall complete a culminating project for graduation.  The project consists of students demonstrating both their learning competencies and preparations related to the State learning goals.

High School + Education Plan:  Students shall have an educational plan for their high school experience, including what they expect to do the following year.

GRADUATION REQUIREMENT CODES

(A)         English credit can be met by the completion of regular English, Honors/Advanced Placement English, Developmental English, or Special Education English courses at the appropriate grade level. 

(B)         Students must have successfully completed a course in Pacific Northwest History/ Washington Studies in 8th grade; otherwise, they must select the Washington State Studies elective from the senior menu as part of the social studies graduation requirement. 

(C)         A total of three (3) credits is required for completion of the Occupational and Fine Arts requirement.  Two credits in one area and one credit in the other area are required. 

(D)        Beginning with the class of 2004, students may use the waiver process, which is consistent with stage law and in place at each high school, to substitute the 1.5 P.E. credit requirement into other crediting areas.  After June 30, 2004, the 1.5 P.E. credit requirement and the .5 Health requirement are replaced by 2.0 credits in Health and Fitness.

(E)         Students must declare their intention to pursue an Advanced Academic Endorsement prior to registration for their junior year. 

(F)         Advanced Academic Endorsement Lab Science is designated as Earth and Space I, Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, Honors Physics, Human Physiology, and Genetics.

High School Credit for Students in Grades Seven and Eight

Students in grades seven and eight may receive credit for fulfilling high school graduation requirements pursuant to RCW.28A.230.090. 

The following Mukilteo School District courses, when offered at the middle school level, are equivalent in content and requirements to district high school courses and may carry high school credit when successfully completed by students while in grade seven or eight: Algebra I, Geometry, French I, German I, Japanese I, Russian I, and Spanish I.
